First Case of COVID-19 in a Hospitalized Patient at WRH

Today,.Dr..Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health and David Musyj, President and Chief Executive Officer for Windsor Regional Hospital jointly announce the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in a hospitalized patient in Windsor-Essex.
The case is a female in her sixties. She developed symptoms on March 18th, went to the COVID-19 Assessment Centre on March 23rd, and was admitted to Windsor Regional Hospital on March 24th where she remains under hospital care. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is currently following up with her close contacts. This confirms the sixth positive case of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex.
"The necessary precautions were taken since the patient first came to hospital," said Windsor Regional Hospital President and CEO David Musyj. "The patient is being cared for by our amazing and capable team members and we are taking all the necessary steps to protect this patient, our staff and our other patients at Windsor Regional Hospital. Please stay safe."
"The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is continuing to investigate and monitor all individuals who are at risk of exposure. As we continue to see cases rise in our area and in the United States this sixth case is a reminder to be vigilant, stay home, and self-isolate if you have travelled, including distancing yourself from family," says Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health.
Immediately self-isolate and contact the Windsor-Essex Public Health Unit at 519-258-2146 ext. 1420 if you have fever, cough, or breathing difficulty AND any of the following:
- You have travelled outside of Canada in the 14 days before onset of illness;
Or
- Close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19; or
- Close contact with a person with acute respiratory illness who travelled within the 14 days prior to their illness onset.
All returning travellers are reminded to self-isolate for 14 days, do not go to work, and monitor for symptoms. Individuals who suspect they have COVID-19 can consult the COVID-19 Self Assessment Tool on the Ontario Government site.
