Paediatric Program
OVERVIEW
The Paediatric Program treats patients from newborn up to their 18th birthday. We care for a wide variety of children with a diagnosis ranging from medical, surgical, oncology to mental health issues. Some of the most common diagnoses are neonatal jaundice, bronchiolitis, asthma, and gastroenteritis.
The program is located at the Met Campus and includes a Paediatric Outpatient Department on 3 North and an Inpatient Unit on 3 East.
The Paediatric Program is a Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU). It is part of the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) which is an extension of the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario.
OUR TEAM
We are a multidisciplinary team of registered nurses, paediatricians and other physicians, child life specialists, social workers, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, other allied health professionals, and dedicated volunteers.
We strive to work with our patients and families to provide safe, evidence-based care in a family-centered environment.
PAEDIATRIC SERVICES
Surgical Safari
Outpatient surgery is performed on children from newborns up until their eighteenth birthday.
Most children ages 3 and up benefit greatly from having the opportunity to learn about upcoming procedures and ask questions. This can help dispel misconceptions, alleviate anxiety, and encourage trust and coping skills. We offer two excellent ways to prepare your child for their day of surgery: attending a pre-operative tour and watching our online video.
The Surgical Safari Tour is a fun and interactive preoperative tour for children having surgery at Windsor Regional Hospital. On the tour, a Child Life Specialist will provide age-appropriate explanations of what your child will see and do on the day of surgery. These tours are typically held on a weekend day before your child's day of surgery and take about 45 minutes. For more information or to schedule a tour, call Child Life Services at 519-254-5577 ext. 53408.
If your child has any developmental disabilities or sensitivities, please feel free to contact Child Life Services before the day of surgery. We will be able to provide support before and on the day of your child's surgery. Our goal is always to make your child's surgery day as stress-free as possible.
Reminders for your child's day of surgery:
- Please arrive 2-3 hours early for your child's day of surgery as directed by the surgeon.
- Your child should not have anything to drink or eat after midnight the night before (unless specified by the medical team).
- Your child may bring a comfort item into the operating room (stuffed animal or blanket).
