Need for a new hospital inspires poet

21-5-2020

Maryanne Mulhern

Local.author.and.poet, Mary Ann Mulhern is adding a poetic voice to the call for a new regional acute care hospital.

As Poet Laureate for the City of Windsor, Mulhern is an ambassador for the arts, culture and heritage sectors in the City of Windsor. In her latest work, she could also be described as an ambassador for the new Windsor-Essex Hospitals System.

Mulhern says she was recently inspired to write a poem called Shovels in the Ground while driving down County Rd. 42, past the chosen site for new hospital.

"I had an overwhelming sense of where are the shovels? Where is our hospital? We should have had shovels in the ground two years ago."

Mulhern says getting the new hospital built is one of the biggest issues facing our community right now and even more important as we deal with the challenges of COVID-19.

"I envision a new hospital with lots of private rooms and space. With people from the county and city coming and being well taken care of."
