6-11-2020
The.Windsor.Regional.Cancer Centre was recognized for being among the top-performing and most improved cancer programs in the province, by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) in the annual Performance Award recognitions.
Windsor Regional Hospital was awarded top performer in tobacco use screening for new cancer patients with 99.57% of patients receiving screening.
"Smoking cessation can have a profound impact on the recovery of patients and we are proud of the work being done to help our patients quit," says Monica Staley Liang, Regional Vice President of the Erie St. Clair Regional Cancer Program.
The hospital was also recognized as the most improved when it comes to getting "priority 2" patients treated within target wait times. In 2019/2020, 96% of patients in this group received treatment within the target wait time. This exceeds provincial targets and is an improvement of 12.94% over the previous year.
"This is an area our teams put a lot of effort into because we know how much is at stake for our patients who are waiting for surgery," says Staley Liang adding, "In this region, we were also fortunate to be in a position that allowed us to continue offering cancer surgeries throughout the first wave of COVID-19."
In addition, Windsor Regional Hospital was recognized for meeting provincial improvement targets in several key areas including the percentage of patients receiving systemic treatment seen within 14 days of referral, percentage of tobacco users that accepted a referral to tobacco use cessation counselling, and percentage of priority 3 patients that received a CT biopsy within a target time.
"We are proud to recognize the outstanding achievements of our partners at our Regional Cancer Programs," Garth Matheson, VP, Planning and Regional Programs and Analytics and Informatics, Ontario Health. "The strength of our partnerships is essential to continue to improve Ontario's cancer system through the dedicated, high-quality work being done at the local level."
Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) assesses Regional Cancer Programs using both regional and facility-level data to monitor progress towards 10 performance indicators and recognize top performers. These indicators encompass topics such as symptom screening, smoking cessation, wait times, and cancer screening rates, along with other high-priority quality and access metrics.
