The new angio room at Windsor Regional Hospital’s Ouellette Campus has been operational for three months, equipped with modern technology and a more comfortable environment for patients.

Used for minimally invasive procedures, such as elective surgeries or in some emergency cases, procedures to prevent patients from requiring surgeries, Dr. Del Dhanoa, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging calls it 'an important investment in the community'.

“The imaging is much clearer than the old machine with low radiation dose and subsequently we can give more precise diagnosis with some of the added software that is included with the table which we never had before,” he says. “It’s amazing.”

He says local patients are blessed with what is likely the newest angio room in the province right now and therefore donations are required to cover the cost of state-of-the-art healthcare investments such as these in order to provide critical care close to home.

The room is one of two angio rooms at WRH and costs $1.2-million. The Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation is raising funds to help pay for the state-of-the-art equipment in the room. To donate, visit wrh.on.ca/support.

The angio room supports a number of programs in the hospital including:

  • Trauma-to stop bleeding
  • Vascular-for patients who need angioplasties
  • Oncology-for biopsies
  • Renal
  • General surgery
  • ICU
  • Thoracics
  • ER/ICU
  • Neurosurgery
  • GI (gastrointestinal)
  • Gynecology
  • Urology

According to Dr. Dhanoa, the old angio room was outdated and had older equipment that required replacement.

“It also gives us extra enhanced software ability for us to perform additional procedures that we normally wouldn’t have done,” he says.

The software in the new angio room is integrated with our hospital’s main software system allowing for more efficient planning of procedures.

“We can actually scan a patient with a cat scan and overlay that with the procedure we are doing live to use as guidance. So some of that software is more advanced and software that we never had access to — until now,” explains Dr. Dhanoa.

The room is used 24-7 to address patient needs and is used for on-call and emergency procedures.

One such patient was Ercolino Conte who had been suffering from debilitating back pain for nearly a year. Ercolino is an active man who doesn’t stop for a second according to his daughter Donna Dordevski, so the pain was affecting her father’s quality of life as he could barely walk or stand up straight.

“Surgery wasn’t an option for him,” said Dordevski. Therefore, doctors decided to use the newly equipped angio room at Windsor Regional Hospital to inject a cortison epidural shot in his spine.

It was the right decision.

“That evening, he started to feel better. And it got better and better. The searing pain was completely gone,” she beams. “It was like night and day.”

Dordevski points out her father’s quality of life has improved significantly from that day on.

“Thanks to this procedure and the care at Windsor Regional Hospital, he can now live a full life.”

Dr. Dhanoa agrees this new state-of-the-art angio room has had an immediate impact on patients.

“Thank you for considering a donation to bring state-of-the-art healthcare close to home,” adds Dr. Dhanoa. “It is a great decision by the hospital to enhance this room and I think the community will see a lot of benefits from this room for years to come.”
