The prompt actions of a Windsor Regional Hospital nurse who stopped to help at the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash last  month has been recognized by Essex-Windsor EMS.

Stefanie Willoughby, a nurse for over 19 years at WRH, was presented this week with a Certificate of Commendation and a Meritorious Service Coin by Essex-Windsor EMS Chief Bruce Krauter.

In November 2021, Stefanie was driving when she came upon a crash. Even before EMS and other first responders arrived, she stopped her vehicle and assisted those in the vehicle.

“Not everyone stops and lends a hand,” said Lori Poole, one of the paramedics who responded to the scene. “It was awesome to have Stefanie working alongside us during the call, assisting us in making a difficult job easier.”

For her part, Stefanie is humbled by the special recognition and has a newfound appreciation for the challenging work paramedics are faced with every day.

“You are the ones who get there first all the time,” said Stefanie who admitted she didn’t feel like her actions were ‘much at the time’, but using her nursing skills and as a CPR instructor, she was focused on the job at hand.

Essex-Windsor EMS Bruce Krauter thanked Stefanie for her bravery saying, “In a situation such as this, most would turn and run in the other direction. Stefanie did not. She stopped, assessed the situation and attended the most critically injured victim of this tragic accident.”
