EVENT DETAILS:
Puthandu (Tamil New Year)
Puthandu is the first day of the Tamil calendar and celebrated as a festival by Tamil Hindus. The date follows the solar Hindu calendar, falling on the first day of the Tamil month Chittirai.
The day involves family time, preparing trays with fruits, flowers and special items, lighting a family puja altar, and visiting the temple. People wear new clothes, pay respect to elders, and sit down for a family vegetarian feast.
Tamil people say “Puttantu valttukal!” roughly translated to “happy new year!” on this day.
