Oncology Nurses Receive Daniel Johnson Jr. Award
26-1-2022
For ten years, the family of Daniel Johnson Jr. has honoured the memory of their loved one by giving two nurses at Windsor Regional Hospital the opportunity to enhance their clinical skills in the area of palliative care.
Johnson was a former inpatient on 4W who passed away in 2010. To remember him, his family established the fund to allow two nurses to attend a conference.
The recipients of the 2021 Daniel Johnson Award are oncology nurses Jordan Gouin and Nhi Tran.
They were presented with their award in a small ceremony on January 26, 2022.
Jordan Gouin has been a nurse since 2018. She began her nursing career at WRH in Renal Dialysis, 4 North at the Met Campus and then worked in the field hospital.
During her time at the field hospital, she met oncology nurses who inspired her to put in a transfer to oncology.
“I knew my first day on 4 West (oncology) that I was home,” she says. “I chose nursing because of the versatility and ability to continue learning. I truly enjoy caring for other people and love the fact that every day is different.”
Nhi Tran has been a nurse for four years where she transitioned from a precepting nursing student to a full-fledged nurse on inpatient oncology unit.
“The idea of making a difference in the lives of others really draws me to nursing,” she says. “I also cite my coworkers being one of my biggest inspirations as the nurses who I have the privilege of working alongside motivates me to be the best I can on a daily basis, as they are a team that gives so much of themselves to others.”
Manager of Inpatient Oncology at Windsor Regional Hospital Jennifer Nadalin was proud to present the recipients with their awards.
“They exemplify compassionate care to their patients at the most difficult time of their lives and the lives of their families,” she said.
As recipients of this award, both Jordan and Nhi, will receive enhanced training on oncology and palliative care, specifically pain and symptom management. The memory of Daniel Johnson Jr. lives on through this Endowment Education Fund and Award. The recipients will improve upon their skills and share it with their colleagues - all for the betterment of our patients. The family deserves a tremendous amount of credit for remembering their loved one in such an honourable way.
