It's been just over nine months since the COVID-19 mass vaccination centre opened at Devonshire Mall, and due to the amazing efforts of front line staff, more than 220,000 doses were administered to Windsor-Essex residents.

The last immunizations will be given on Saturday, April 2 before the centre closes its doors for the final time.

Local officials, including Windsor Regional Hospital President and CEO David Musyj, Windsor-Essex County Health Unit CEO Nicole Dupuis, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Essex County Warden Gary McNamara gathered to mark the historic occasion and thank those who played a role in making the operation a success.

“You have saved so many lives, so thank you for that,” said Musyj, “WECHU, County of Essex, City of Windsor. We can go on and on with respect to all of us coming together and making this happen across the whole region and the amount of work behind the scenes to pull this off is dramatic.”

“This is really the culmination. This is the heart ultimately of where so many vaccines were administered in the community,” said Dilkens, “It’s right that we were here at the beginning to say ‘this is important, people need to come and get their vaccine’ and it’s right and important that we’re here at the end.”

The Devonshire Mall location in the former Sears officially opened on June 21, 2021 and, this March began to offer catch-up non-COVID immunizations for local students in Grades 7 to 12 as well.

“The vaccination clinic at Devonshire Mall has been a fundamental component to our response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dupuis, “Not only has the site delivered the majority of our COVID-19 vaccines to residents, it evolved and shifted with each new eligible group of residents including becoming a home to superheroes and Disney characters."

COVID-19 vaccinations remain available on a walk-in basis until the centre closes while children in need of catch-up immunizations must book an appointment before April 1.

The centre will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for its remaining days.
