A new, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment machine is live at Windsor Regional Hospital.

In February, staff unveiled an Endoscopic Ultrasound Machine for local patients.

The machine combines a high-frequency, ultrasound probe with an endoscope to examine the wall of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, rectum, pancreas, and beyond.

The machine is an integral part of the management of a variety of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, and patients do not need to have major surgery for tissue biopsy.

“This is an exciting time for us, as we finally come to a point where we have an Endoscopic Ultrasound machine,” says Dr. Sabeena Misra, Gastroenterologist.

“This will help reduce stress and anxiety for the patient, help improve diagnosis and improve patient outcomes.”

Prior to having a EUS machine, Erie St. Clair LHIN residents were referred to London Health Sciences for procedures that typically take 30 minutes.

“More than 100 Windsor/Essex residents underwent EUS procedures outside the Erie St. Clair LHIN in 2020, because the procedure was not offered locally,” says Dr. Ben Mousa, Gastroenterologist at Windsor Regional Hospital.

WRH estimates 2-3 EUS cases/week, or 140 cases annually from the Erie St. Clair LHIN can now be performed at Windsor Regional Hospital.

Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation generously supported the purchase of the EUS machine throughout 2022, raising funds through their annual “Sail Into Summer” event at the Windsor Yacht Club.
