In April 2024, Accreditation Canada and its experienced accreditors came to WRH to review hospital organization, policies and procedures. Accreditors found WRH exceeds all standards set by Accreditation Canada.
WRH was awarded "Back2Back" Accreditation With Exemplary Standing after receiving the same Accreditation Canada designation in 2019..

Nurse Police Team Program Expanded to 7 days a week |
Windsor Police and Windsor Regional Hospital were excited to share the Nurse Police Team (NPT) program was extended from three to seven days per week.
Launched as a pilot project in May 2023, the NPT program pairs frontline police officers with nursing professionals to deliver proactive healthcare to people struggling with substance use.

2nd Cardiac Catheterization Table Approved |
Thanks for provincial funding, construction is well underway on the project which will see the renovation of the second floor at Ouellette Campus to accommodate a badly needed second cardiac catheterization table and provide life-saving angioplasty procedures for cardiac patients in our region.

Regional Health Care Partners Working Together to Prepare for High Seasonal Volumes |
In anticipation of increased hospital volumes heading into winter, local health care partners – Erie Shores HealthCare (ESHC), Essex-Windsor EMS (EMS), Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare (HDGH) and Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) - collaborated on capacity and resource management while also spreading the word about what the community should expect in the season ahead.

ED Wait Time Clocks Relaunch |
The wait time clocks are designed to give patients an average estimate of the time it takes to see a doctor from the moment they are triaged. Additionally, the clocks display the total number of patients currently being treated and those waiting in the emergency department.
The clocks are an improvement over previous versions as rather than just predicting wait times based on historical data, the new clocks draw from real-time data based on current ED visits.

WRH Celebrates Opening of New Radiation Bunker |
Windsor Regional Hospital was excited to announce the completion of construction of a fourth (4th) Linear Accelerator (LINAC) to conduct radiation treatments for Windsor Regional Cancer Centre patients.
The project was funded through a $30-million investment by the Ontario government which also included funding to renovate the cardiac catheterization lab at Ouellette Campus.

PURSUIT OF A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART HOSPITAL

Preparing for Project Advancement |
Windsor Regional Hospital continues to work closely with the Ministry of Health and Infrastructure Ontario to advance the project to the next stage in the Ministry’s Capital Planning Process. In addition, efforts are underway to advance the first phase of the project.
This includes the construction of a parking garage, and education, learning and administrative building, and site works to provide the necessary infrastructure for future phases. Construction on this work is expected to begin in early 2026.

Focus on Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment |
The Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment strategy, including the identification, procurement, and installation of FF&E items is vital to ensuring the hospital is functional and welcoming on opening day.
The process began in 2024 with the support of IHP and is ramping up in 2025, starting with a detailed inventory process and room-by-room planning.

Windsor Regional Hospital has set a bold vision for the future. After extensive consultation with hospital users - including clinical and non-clinical staff, professional staff, and patient and family representatives - Windsor Regional Hospital, in collaboration with digital healthcare experts at Angus Connect, has established a clear vision and set of goals outlining how technology will be used in the new hospital.

Balancing Performance, Aesthetics, & Functionality in the Selection of Materials & Finishes |
Critical design elements will have a major impact on accessibility, durability, maintenance, infection prevention and control, and the overall user experience at the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital.
The Design Standards Committee – a multidisciplinary team of Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) leadership - met with Interior Design Experts from the Stantec Planning, Design, and Conformance (PDC) team to determine preferred materials and finishes for the new hospital.

Donation Has Eyes on the Future of Medical Research & Education |
A pair of local surgeons kept their legacy of giving to the Windsor-Essex community alive.
In 2022, Dr. Fouad Tayfour and Dr. Barry Emara came forward with a $250,000 donation to establish the ‘Tayfour-Emara Excellence in Research & Education Fund’. The following year they donated $330,000, continuing the focus on healthcare research and training with a goal of better patient care.
The latest funding installment was split between two important areas - $130,000 towards the “Tayfour-Emara Excellence in Research & Education Fund” and $100,000 towards general, ophthalmology equipment, for a total donation of $230,000 in 2024.

$412,714 Awarded Locally for Health Research |
WE-SPARK Health Institute and its funding partners (Erie Shores HealthCare, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, St. Clair College, the University of Windsor and Windsor Regional Hospital) awarded 20 research grants totaling $412,714 to tackle local health challenges in its latest round of funding.
The grants support early-stage, innovative health research and education projects in Windsor-Essex involving over 140 researchers, trainees and thousands of participants.

A team of researchers are collaborating with Windsor Regional Hospital oncologists on a pilot project to improve treatment outcomes for hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer patients, a group that represents a significant portion of breast cancer diagnoses.

The third annual International Health Research Conference, hosted by the WE-Spark Health Institute, brought together more than 350 researchers, clinicians, educators, and students from across Canada and the United States to engage with experts, foster collaboration, and explore the latest advancements in health research.

The region’s leading healthcare and academic institutions reaffirmed their commitment to local health research and innovation with the renewal of a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Erie Shores HealthCare, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, St. Clair College, the University of Windsor, and Windsor Regional Hospital are once again united under the WE-SPARK Health Institute to strengthen their collaborative vision.

Nurses Honoured with Recognition for Excellence, Education Funding |
As part of National Nursing Week, nurses at Windsor Regional Hospital were honoured to recognize nursing excellence and continuing education efforts.
Twelve nurses were given the Jeanne Mance Extraordinary Nursing Care Award which goes to a nurse who continually goes above and beyond to provide compassionate and professional care to patients and exemplifies teamwork, compassion, stewardship, and respect.
Three WRH nurses were also named as recipients of the annual Lori Dupont Bursary, which assists staff with continuing education costs. Each successful candidate is awarded up to $1,000.

WRH Nurses Honoured at Survivor Day Celebration |
It was quite the honour for a pair of Windsor Regional Hospital nurses who went above and beyond the call of duty!
Each year, Essex-Windsor EMS hosts ‘Survivor Day’ to share the stories of survivors and those who helped save their lives. The 11th annual event featured 27 Survivor Day cases including the story of Jerry Lee who collapsed while playing pool with friends at a Windsor bar.
Fortunately for Jerry, WRH RNs Naomi Robertson and Chelsea Hebert happened to be at the bar that night and jumped into action and saved his life. Amazing job Naomi and Chelsea!

WRH Physician Receives Organ and Tissue Donation Award |
A Windsor Regional Hospital physician was recognized by Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) for his outstanding efforts to integrate organ and tissue donation into quality end-of-life care.
Dr. Tyler Jervis received the Ontario Health (TGLN)’s Provincial Donation Champion Award, given to healthcare professionals who are exceptional advocates for organ and tissue donation.

Historic $15 million gift from Solcz Family Foundation |
The Solcz Family Foundation made a historic $15 million gift to the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital. This is the largest single gift ever made in the Windsor-Essex region!
The funds will provide critical funding for equipment and technologies at the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital. In recognition of the Solcz family’s exceptional gift, the Family Birthing and Paediatric Care Centre, as well as the Paediatric Emergency Zone, located within the Emergency Department, will be named after the Solcz Family Foundation.

Local Doctor Donates to WRH |
The Emergency Department at Windsor Regional Hospital Met Campus received a new Transport Ventilator thanks to two generous donations.
Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation Board Member, Vinoo Dayal, held a Valentine’s Day Garba event to raising $16,400.
Dr. Tony Pattinson, an Obstetrician (OB) at Met Campus, along with his wife, Mary, a nurse, and daughter, Lily, a paramedic with Essex-Windsor EMS, teamed up to donate the remaining balance ($53,600) to ensure the equipment was purchased for Windsor Regional Hospital.

W.E. Care for Kids Donates to WRH Foundation |
W.E. Care for Kids Foundation came through in a big way to support the purchases of new equipment at Windsor Regional Hospital.
The local children’s charity presented a cheque to Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation for $305,699.15 which will help cover the cost of equipment in the Paediatric Unit, Family Birthing Centre and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Corvettes Collect Cash for WRH Foundation! |
Local car enthusiasts put the pedal to the metal in 2024, making a large donation to Windsor Regional Hospital.
The Corvette Club of Windsor held its annual Waterfront Car Show raising $34,000 for the Paediatric Oncology Satellite Unit at Met Campus - its largest donation to date!

Run For Windsor Donates More Than $30,000 to WRH Foundation |
After taking a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Run for Windsor made its return to Malden Park in 2024 raising $30,750!
To date, Run for Windsor has raised $78,250 for Windsor Regional Hospital.

Inspired by a deep-rooted connection to the community and decades of service at Windsor Regional Hospital, Dr. Tony and Mary Pattinson contributed $1.5 million toward vital equipment and technologies at the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital.
Dr. Pattinson, an OB-GYN and former department chief at Windsor Regional Hospital retired last year after three decades of caring for patients while wife Mary is a retired emergency nurse.
