ACCREDITATION WITH EXEMPLARY STANDING |
Following a thorough assessment and evaluation by Accreditation Canada surveyors who explored the hospital campuses, spoke to staff, patients, and volunteers, and evaluated the hospital against 2615 national standards, WRH received the highest possible designation.

NEW PET/CT SCANNER FOR PATIENTS IN WINDSOR-ESSEX |
Hundreds of patients in Windsor and Essex County requiring PET/CT scans to diagnose medical conditions will no longer have to travel hundreds of kilometres to hospitals in London, Hamilton, Mississauga and elsewhere thanks to this new state-of-the-art technology that arrived earlier this spring.

EXPANDING ROBOTIC-ASSISTED SURGERIES |
Revolutionary technology that has allowed safer and faster surgeries for prostate cancer patients is now being used for kidney procedures. The expansion of the use of this technology will allow for 25 partial nephrectomies per year, on top of the 50 prostate cancer procedures completed annually.

CLOCKING STEPS ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY |
The Movement Matters program was introduced to encourage “at-risk” patients to take a walk, log their steps, and see how far they can go on the Road to Recovery. Since the program began in September, patients have travelled a combined total of more than 700 km, or as far as Brockville, ON.

Requesting a smudge ceremony is now easier for Indigenous patients at WRH. The Indigenous Practice Protocol was put in place outlining steps staff are to take when a request is made and special rooms have been designated to accommodate the ceremonies. |

STRONG SUPPORT FOR THE PLAN
The call for a new Hospitals System is growing louder. In November, the group 42 Forward formed and held a rally to voice their support. This year the city's Poet Laureate added a poetic call for support and the WindsorEssex Development Corporation began the WE Can't Wait campaign to mobilize residents in support of:

LAND PLANNING DECISION
|
In December the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT) issued a ruling clearing the way for a new hospital at the selected site. That ruling is currently being challenged by the group opposed to the site. A decision on the group’s leave to appeal request is expected later this year.

GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS NEW HOSPITAL SUPPORT |
In its Fall 2019 Market Update, Infrastructure Ontario, the Crown agency that is responsible for delivering capital projects across the province confirmed that the state-of-the-art new acute care hospital for Windsor-Essex is one of 32 projects on Infrastructure Ontario’s capital projects list.

RELATIONSHIP PROTOCOL SIGNING WITH BKEJWANONG COMMUNITY |
This year WRH and the Erie St. Clair Regional Cancer Program Participate in a Relationship Protocol Signing between Cancer Care Ontario and the Bkejwanong First Nation. The protocol outlines principles of how the parties will work together going forward to address common cancer priorities.

WRH is now part of a worldwide movement that promotes best practice by reducing unnecessary testing and treatments for our patients following a designation from Choosing Wisely Canada. The national voice for reducing unnecessary tests and treatments in health care has awarded WRH with a Level 1 Certification.

This year, the team at WRH received special recognition for their efforts in securing donors from Trillium Gift of Life Network, the Government of Ontario agency responsible for delivering and coordinating organ and tissue donation and transplantation services across the province. |

Staff, volunteers, and patients in the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre put their dancing shoes on to recognize and celebrate 2019 Human Touch Award Winner Michelle Prince. Prince honoured posthumously with a Human Touch Award from Cancer Care Ontario. These awards are presented annually to recognize exemplary and compassionate patient care. |

A GENEROUS BUNCH |
The WRH Compassion for Community program recognizes the many ways WRH team members contribute to improving the lives of those all throughout Windsor-Essex and beyond. This year, WRH employees participated in numerous community fundraising events and donated everything from food and clothing to blood. This group from Learning and Workplace Development had fun processing food to help feed the hungry.

COMPASSION FOR THE LARGER COMMUNITY |
Dr. Indryas Woldie’s recent trip to Ethiopia is an outstanding example of the dedication of WRH team members for making the world a better place. The successful trip included the delivery of a $3000 donation from a WRH bake sale event to the pediatric oncology hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
