Day Surgery
Preparing for Your Day Surgery
When you arrive at the hospital please report to the Admitting Department at the time advised by your pre-operative phone call or to the schedule provided from your Pre-admission visit.
Please note that some physicians require you to come 2-3 hours prior to your scheduled surgery (you should be advised of this ahead of time).
On the day of your surgery:
- Take any medication that you have been advised to take during your Pre-admission visit
- Do not have anything to eat or drink including water prior to your surgery (as advised on your Pre-admission visit)
- Do not smoke
- Bring a driver with you
- Any equipment you have been advised to buy (i.e. TED, polar cuffs, new dentures)
- Valid OHIP card
- Personal care items
- Child’s favorite toy
- All home medications in their original containers
DO NOT BRING
- Jewellery, including piercings (this will prevent burns from occurring during your surgery)
- Valuables (credit cards, etc.)

When you arrive on the unit you will be asked to wait in the waiting room.
Next, the nurse will take your temperature, blood pressure, pulse and a quick review of your previously taken history. Please tell the nurse if you have any allergies or if you are currently experiencing any illness. Those experiencing fever and/or cold symptoms may be required to have their surgery rescheduled, depending on the severity.
You will then be asked to change into a hospital gown and housecoat. The nurse will give you the choice of whether to walk to the operating room or go by stretcher. Dentures, glasses, jewelry / piercing, and other prosthesis will be removed prior to surgery. Your belongings will be stored after you sign a release for retaining personal possessions.
The nurse will start an intravenous and/or give medication if required by your physician..

Following your surgery you will go to the Recovery Room. Please note that patients who are having a cysto/minor procedure may not be required to go to the Recovery Room.
After close monitoring in the Recovery Room (approx. 1 hour), you will then be transferred back to Day Surgery.
In Day Surgery your expected length of stay would be approx. 1-2 hours.

After you have been discharged from Day Surgery, you should plan to spend time relaxing and resting in the comfort of your home. There are certain steps to follow to promote a smooth and speedy recovery.
The responsible adult who will escort you home must be available when you are ready to be discharged. You must have a responsible adult stay overnight with you at your home on the day of the surgery.
For the first 24 hours following your surgery, do not drive, use any power tools or drink any alcoholic beverages. Resume your normal diet as tolerated unless otherwise instructed. If you are experiencing excessive pain, bleeding, have a temperature, developing a large bruise or if it is continually growing larger, please call your physician immediately or return to the Emergency Department. |
