RESOURCES AND INFORMATION

Breast Screening for Women 50 - 74

The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is a program of Cancer Care Ontario. The OBSP provides high-quality breast cancer screening for women aged 50 to 74 years. Breast cancer screening is free-of-charge for women in Ontario.

Women between the ages of 50-74 do not require a referral from their - primary care physician. To book your OBSP appointment (Mammogram) at the Met Campus, please call 519-254-5577, Ext. 52546.

Breast Screening for Women at High Risk?

Windsor Regional Hospital is a designated Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) High-Risk Screening Site. We perform annual Mammograms & MRIs for women 30-69 that are determined to be at “high risk” for breast cancer based on their personal or family history or a known gene mutation (BRCA1/BRCA2, etc.) To receive high-risk breast screening you must be referred by a primary care provider and have genetic counseling and/or testing to determine eligibility for the program.

The OBSP High-Risk Screening Centre:

  • Provides genetic counseling and assessments for women who may be at high risk for breast cancer (if appropriate).
  • Offers annual screening mammography and breast MRI for women who have been confirmed to be at high risk for breast cancer.
  • Facilitates follow-up breast assessment services for women who require extra tests.
  • Sends annual reminder letters for breast MRI and Mammogram scheduled on the same day.

FAQ's

How do I prepare for a mammogram?

Please do not wear any deodorant or powder to your mammogram appointment. Wear a 2-piece outfit if possible. When you arrive in the Mammography department, check in at the reception desk.  The clerk will ask you for your health card and verify your name and date of birth.

How long will the test take?

The test will take 5 - 10 minutes.

What should I expect during the test?

The technologist will bring you into the room and ask you to answer a few questions about yourself and your family history. They will explain the exam to you and answer any questions you may have. The technologist will then begin the exam and position you appropriately. Expect to feel pressure from the compression. A certain amount of pressure is necessary for a good mammogram so it is important for patients to know that each picture only takes a few seconds. You should not feel any discomfort after your mammogram.
