2021/2022 - YEAR IN REVIEW

While it has been a challenging year for everyone in healthcare, the team at WRH has remained unwavering in its commitment to outstanding and compassionate care throughout these unprecedented times.

Working closely with the support of our regional and community partners, team members have worked tirelessly to prevent the spread of COVID-19, cope with the impact of the virus and keep our community safe. In addition, they successfully implemented some major initiatives and celebrated key milestones in the move toward a new Windsor-Essex Hospitals System.

The following highlights are just a sample of the many accomplishments from this past year.

 

TOGETHER WE STAY STRONG - THE COVID-19 RESPONSE

COVID-19 VACCINATION CENTRE OPENS AT DEVONSHIRE MALL
VaxThe new COVID-19 vaccination centre at Devonshire Mall opened on June 21, 2021. The centre administered more than 220,000 vaccines before closing on April 2, 2022.

 

WRH CELEBRATES PARTNERSHIP WITH ST. CLAIR COLLEGE
Field HospitalWindsor Regional Hospital offered tremendous thanks and appreciation as it returned the St. Clair College Sportsplex. The facility saw quite the transformation over the 14 months it was used as a COVID-19 field hospital.

 

WRH THANKS UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR PARTNERS FOR THE USE OF DOWNTOWN SCHOOL FOR VACCINATIONS
VaxWindsor Hall was converted into a vaccination clinic from March 22 to June 21, 2021. More than 31,000 individuals received COVID-19 inoculations.

 

INTRODUCING THE PUMA CLINIC
PUMAWindsor Regional Hospital opened a new paediatric clinic for urgent medical assessments of children 17 years of age and under at the site of the former Met Campus COVID-19 Assessment Centre. On April 4, 2022, PUMA Clinic services were moved inside Met Campus.

 

COVID-19 VACCINE 1ST ANNIVERSARY
Vax 1st anniversaryA milestone for Windsor-Essex as we celebrated the first anniversary of offering COVID-19 vaccines to our community.

 

WRH GRADUALLY RESUMES NON-URGENT SURGERIES
SurgeryIn February, Windsor Regional Hospital implemented a plan to gradually ramp up surgeries and procedures based on Ontario Health guidelines.

 

SUPPORTING A CULTURE OF PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY CARE

WRH LAUNCHES RECRUITMENT DRIVE WITH GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO SUPPORTED INCENTIVES

WRH PURCHASES NEW TECHNOLOGY TO HELP STROKE PATIENTS

NEW ANGIO ROOM IS AN IMPORTANT INVESTMENT IN THE COMMUNITY
ANGIOThe new angio room at WRH's Ouellette Campus is equipped with modern technology and a more comfortable environment for patients.

 

FOCUS ON RESEARCH

COLLEGE STUDENTS EXAMINE RADIATION THERAPY WAIT TIMES
Rad TherapySt. Clair College Data Analytics students developed an innovative scheduling application to help address wait times for radiation therapy at Windsor Regional Hospital.

 

WRH ER PHYSICIANS DEVELOP CANADA HOOD
Innovation Two Windsor Regional Hospital Physicians were behind the development of an innovative device to help prevent some COVID patients from requiring ventilation.

 

PURSUIT OF A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART HOSPITAL

IT’S HAPPENING!
happeningIn October, Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Christine Elliot visited the area and announced plans to unlock funds to continue planning for the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital.

 

FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMMING BEGINS
PaulFollowing the provincial funding announcement, work began on Stage 2 planning for the project. A project management team, led by Project Director Paul Landry, was established to oversee the project. In January, 38 User Groups representing the different clinical and support services at WRH started meeting to develop the Functional Program. This work is supported by Agnew Peckham Health Care Planning Consultants and is expected to be completed by the end of June.

 

HAVE YOUR SAY!
New hospitalWindsor Regional Hospital is committed to ensuring members of the public are engaged in this project at every step. Before Stage 2 planning began, the public was invited to share priorities for the new hospital design. This led to the establishment of a Project Vision and set of Design Principles that will guide decision-making throughout the planning process. Windsor Regional Hospital also launched a new hospital engagement site & town hall series offering an opportunity to learn more about program-specific areas of the project, meet the User Group leaders planning these areas, share ideas and ask questions.

 

Introducing the PMO Report
Field HospitalIn an effort to keep everyone informed about the project, the Project Management team introduced The PMO Report in February. The monthly newsletter includes updates, highlights, and opportunities to get involved.

 

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE - AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS

Aruna Windsor Regional Hospital's Mediator Aruna Koushik was named one of the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario's Women of Excellence in the newly created Social Justice Award category.

Retiree Mary Giswein looks back on her 47-year career with fond memories and is content to have spent it, in its entirety, in the Family Birthing Centre.

 

HIV CARE PROGRAM MARKS 30 YEAR MILESTONE
HIV CareThe program first opened its doors 30 years ago with a focus on the patient's physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs.

 

WRH AWARDED FOR ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION
Organ DonationWindsor Regional Hospital was recognized by Ontario Health's Trillium Gift of Life Network for its outstanding efforts to integrate organ and tissue donation into quality end-of-life care.

 

WRH CHIEF OF PSYCHIATRY RECOGNIZED
Dr Corina The Association of General Hospital Psychiatric Services (AGHPS) selected Dr. Velehorschi as one of the recipients of the 2021 Jane Chamberlin Award.

 

WRH RECEIVES 2021 HEALTHY WORKPLACE AWARDS
Healthy Workplace Awards Windsor Regional Hospital was recognized for supporting the health and well-being of employees during the second year of the pandemic.

 

WRH NURSE RECEIVES SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Stefanie_AwardStefanie Willoughby, a nurse in Renal Hemodialysis, was presented with a Certificate of Commendation and a Meritorious Service Coin by Essex-Windsor EMS Chief Bruce Krauter.

 

ONCOLOGY NURSES RECEIVE DANIEL JOHNSON JR. AWARD
Award The 2021 recipients were oncology nurses Jordan Gouin and Nhi Tran. The award is named after Daniel Johnson Jr., a former patient who passed away in 2010.

 

WRH EARNS USING BLOOD WISELY DESIGNATION
UBWWindsor Regional Hospital, both Met and Ouellette Campuses, were excited to announce the achievement of the Using Blood Wisely Designation resulting in improved patient care.

 

RECOGNIZING LOCAL BLACK MEDICAL PIONEERS
BHM During Black History Month, we honoured the legacy of Black Canadians and the contributions they made in moving toward a more equitable society.

HATS ON FOR HEALTHCARE SURPASSES ITS CAMPAIGN GOAL
Hats onThe Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation was thrilled to announce the campaign surpassed its fundraising goal raising more than $50,700 to support the COVID-19 Assistance Fund.

 

WRH FOUNDATION PRESENTS $2.5-MILLION CHEQUE TO WRH BOARD
Cheque Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation Board of Directors Chair Beth Ann Prince announced a total of $5.7-million was raised in 2020/2021.

 

WE CARE FOR KIDS DONATED MORE THAN $230,000 TO WINDSOR REGIONAL HOSPITAL
WE Care for KidsDespite challenging times for fundraising during the pandemic, the WE Care for Kids Foundation managed to come through in a big way to support the purchase of paediatric equipment at Windsor Regional Hospital.
