The following highlights are just a sample of the many accomplishments from this past year.

 

SUPPORTING A CULTURE OF PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY CARE

MRI Capacity Expanded
desktop mobileIn an effort to reduce wait times and tackle a backlog caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Province of Ontario committed to doubling magnetic resonance imaging or MRI capacity in the Windsor-Essex region.

 

Improvements to Heart, Cancer Treatment Thanks to Ford Government
desktop mobileThanks to a $30-million investment by the Ford government, the cardiac catheterization lab at Ouellette Campus will be moved from the basement to the second floor and expanded to include a second table, greatly expanding patient access to this life-saving treatment.

 

WRH First in Ontario to Perform Robot-Assisted Hip Replacement
desktop mobileIn February 2023, Dr. Greg Jasey and Dr. Mike McCaffrey became the first surgeons in Ontario to perform a total hip replacement with the assistance of the Stryker Mako SmartRobotics system - a specialized robot used to perform joint replacement surgery.

 

New To Windsor: Minimally Invasive Aortic Surgery
desktop mobileWindsor Regional Hospital added specialized services for vascular patients, keeping Windsor-Essex patients from traveling to London & Toronto.

In October 2022, WRH began performing Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR), and several other advanced hybrid techniques to manage aortic pathologies, from abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA’s) to aortoiliac occlusive disease, to managing peripheral aneurysms and occlusions in the legs.

 

Upgrades to the Medical Lab are Completed
desktop mobileThe process to implement new testing instruments, mirrored between the Met and Ouellette hospital laboratories started five years ago with reviews, evaluations, approvals, and renovations.

The Roche Cobas Pro Chemistry platform went live at the end of February. It encompasses over a hundred individual tests, including electrolytes, cardiac markers, and liver enzymes. It will conduct over 1 million tests a year.

 

WRH Now Offering Fentanyl Test Strips
desktop mobileThe opioid crisis continues to afflict the Windsor-Essex community. In 2021, WRH saw 573 emergency visits specifically involving fentanyl - including 346 overdoses.

Windsor Regional Hospital began offering fentanyl test kits to patients before they are discharged from the Emergency Department or Mental Health Assessment Unit. The test strips are distributed in a kit that also includes the life-saving drug naloxone used to combat overdoses.

 

Mental Health Patients Getting Extra Care Post Discharge
desktop mobileThe Transitional Care Pathway provides access to follow-up care for mild to moderate mental health patients after they’ve been released from WRH’s Mental Health Assessment Unit.

The partnership between WRH and the Windsor Family Health Team - Windsor Team Care Centre has been demonstrating positive results in supporting mental health patients after they’ve been discharged from the hospital.

 

State-of-the-Art Eye Surgery Centre Now Open
desktop mobileWindsor Surgical Centre and Windsor Regional Hospital were proud to announce the continuation of their partnership with the opening of a brand new facility that will serve thousands of eye surgery patients every year while freeing up hospital resources.

 

New Program Sees NICU Parents Offering Peer-to-Peer Support
desktop mobileOur NICU Family Advisory Care Team, which includes parents from the community, spent a year putting together a Peer Support program for parents of babies who have been hospitalized at WRH.

 

New Substance Recovery Program Aimed at 2SLGBTQ+ Community
desktop mobileWindsor Regional Hospital was proud to help promote a new substance abuse program coordinated by local healthcare partners that cater to the needs of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Thanks to a partnership between the Windsor Team Care Centre, Family Services Windsor-Essex, and the Windsor Pride Community, the new program provides participants with a safe and inclusive space to receive help with their recovery.

 

Kidney Clinic Returns to Ouellette Campus

GE HealthCare and WRH Enter Long-Term Innovative Technology Agreement

Newly Renovated Multi-Faith Prayer Room Now Open at Ouellette Campus

With this goal in mind, the Ouellette Campus Multi-Faith Prayer Room was renovated to meet the religious needs of patients and staff.

 

Toldo Foundation Supports Home Dialysis Unit at WRH
desktop mobileThe Regional Renal Program at Windsor Regional Hospital was recognized by the Ontario Renal Network for providing quality care for area patients with kidney disease, made possible due to our incredibly hard-working staff and donors to the program.

One such notable donor is the Toldo Foundation - prior to his passing in 2009, Anthony P. Toldo Sr. made a significant donation to sponsor the in-patient Renal Program at the Ouellette Campus.

 

FOCUS ON RESEARCH

WRH & University of Windsor Expand Ongoing Partnership

The project would position Windsor-Essex as a leading region for education, training, and research for the healthcare sector for many years to come.

 

WRH Launches New Research & Education Fund
desktop mobileA pair of long-time staples in the Windsor-Essex medical community planted the seed for a new initiative aimed at putting the region on the world stage when it comes to health care research.

Dr. Fouad Tayfour and Dr. Barry Emara came forward with a $250,000 donation which will see the launch of the ‘Tayfour-Emara Research & Education Fund’.

PURSUIT OF A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART HOSPITAL

New Hospital Timeline Announced
desktop mobileWindsor Regional Hospital now has a projected time frame for building the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital. After multiple mentions in the Ontario 2022 Budget, specific details were released as part of Infrastructure Ontario’s (IO) May 2022 Market Update indicating the tendering process to start in early 2025 and construction scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027.

 

Space, privacy, and connectivity are top community priorities for new hospital
desktop mobileSpacious, single-patient rooms, plenty of natural light, intuitive wayfinding, and convenient parking were just some of the top priorities identified by community members who provided input into the future design of the New Windsor/Essex Acute Care Hospital during a recent public participation campaign

 

Health Minister Announces Milestone for New Hospital Project
desktop mobileOntario’s Minster of Health and Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones made a stop in Windsor for a special announcement and to pledge the provincial government’s support for a new hospital in Windsor-Essex.

 

Infection prevention measures integrated throughout new hospital planning

When it is finished, every area and department of the new hospital will meet or exceeds best practices and Canadian healthcare standards when it comes to preventing the spread of infections.

TOGETHER WE STAY STRONG - THE COVID-19 RESPONSE

PUMA Clinic Closes Its Doors
desktop mobile Windsor Regional Hospital's Paediatric Urgent Medical Assessment (PUMA) Clinic closed after a successful run serving the local community during some of the busiest periods of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Operating from August 2021 to October 2022, the clinic for children under the age of 18 saw over 10,000 young patients with a wide range of possible COVID-19 symptoms offering them testing, urgent care medical assessments and, where appropriate, COVID-19 vaccinations.

 

Adult & Paediatric Respiratory Care Centre
desktop mobileIn November 2022, the COVID-19 clinical assessment centre at Ouellette Campus saw its mandate expanded to allow assessments of both adult and paediatric patients for influenza-like illness. These changes were made to help meet rising community demand and ease pressures on area emergency departments.

 

COVID-19 Assessment Centres Close 
desktop mobileAnother milestone in the fight against COVID-19 was on April 1, 2023, COVID-19 Assessment Centres at Windsor Regional Hospital and Erie Shores HealthCare closed their doors.

The decision came following a significant drop in the number of patients accessing the centres as COVID-19 numbers continued to trend down.
